Tribute tree
Planting or sponsoring a tree is an ideal way to honour the memory of a loved one, providing longevity and beauty, supporting biodiversity and symbolising the nature of life.
Some species can live for hundreds of years, while even the most transient typically go on for over half a century. A tree planted this year could be a mighty specimen in a hundred years’ time and still going strong 200 years later, or even far beyond.
In that time, the right tree will have provided food and shelter for a vast number of birds, insects, mammals and other wildlife across generations while sequestering carbon, protecting soil and displaying its uniquely dynamic visual appeal.
If you’re interested in a tribute tree, you can either have a new one planted for £250 or sponsor an existing prominent tree in a popular public area for £1,000.
Plant a new tree (£250)
You can choose for your new tribute tree to be planted in one of two locations. The first of these is the headland above Mourier Valley, where you can choose one of our carefully selected species such as elder, hazel or hornbeam.
The alternative is a pine at Val de la Mare, on the opposite side of the reservoir to the arboretum, in what’s known as the pinetum – an arboretum exclusive to pines. The existing Scots pines are already struggling as the climate warms, so the plan is to diversify by adding better-suited species such as black pine (Pinus nigra) and stone pine (Pinus pinea).
Whichever option you choose, we’ll agree choice of tree with you and get it planted at next opportunity. Once planted, we’ll send you a certificate that includes the tree’s species and location details.
We plant trees from December to early March, during the season when they have the best chance of survival. However, you can arrange a tribute tree with us at any time of year for the upcoming season.
Sponsor a prominent tree (£1,000)
As with planting your own tree, sponsoring one that’s already well known to the community is a wonderful way to pay tribute to a loved one.
If you’re looking for something extra-special, for £1,000 you can sponsor an existing prominent tree in one of two popular public areas: Coronation Playing Fields (formerly Millbrook Playing Fields) in St Lawrence or Val de la Mare Arboretum in St Peter, where a wide variety of trees, including exotic specimens, are available across its numerous collections.
Sponsorship includes a metal plaque on which your chosen wording will be engraved
