Val de la Mare Arboretum

Established in 1975, Val de la Mare Arboretum is a popular beauty spot in St Peter that offers the visitor twelve diverse tree collections – or fourteen including two new trails. Notable specimens include four Chinese swamp cypresses (Glyptostrobus pensilis) that are the only seed-bearing examples of their species in the northern hemisphere – a great example of how the arboretum benefits research and attracts interest from afar.

In 2012, after a period of relative neglect, Jersey Trees for Life entered into an agreement with the landowners, Jersey Water, to assume ongoing responsibility for the arboretum’s upkeep and development. A further three-year grant followed in 2023 to refresh ‘Val’, including new trees, walking routes and signage.

Today, thanks to the ongoing restoration work by our team and volunteers, Val de la Mare Arboretum is in rude health despite losing several specimen trees to major storms in recent years (mainly eucalyptus, elm, oak and pine). It’s also been home to our annual flagship fundraising event, Run for the Trees, since 2024.

Our thanks go to all sponsors of Val de la Mare Arboretum’s collections and individual trees, as well as to Jersey Water for funding its renaissance. .
