Run for the Trees raises over £5,500 for Jersey's trees

On Sunday 20 September, the best part of 200 runners, walkers,volunteers and supporters headed to Val de la Mare for Run for the Trees,Jersey Trees for Life’s third annual community race and fun run.

Spirits were high and the overcast conditions were good for running as everyone gathered in Val de la Mare’s top car park in preparation for a 9.30am start.

First to go were the 3 km route participants, sent on their way by Matt Falla, Managing Partner at sponsors, Evelyn Partners, with the customary shout of “Run for the Trees!”. They headed down the main path, through the heart of the arboretum and all the way to the dam before an about turn and heading back.

The remaining runners set off minutes later, spurred on this time by Rob Sinden of Deloitte, sponsors of the 6 km and 12 km trails. The 6 km trail is a challenge. It heads anti-clockwise around the reservoir and down then up separate steps at opposite sides of the dam, before snaking back through the changing altitudes and tough terrain of the Chinese, Walnut and Birch Collections. The 12 km race is two loops of this, making it highly challenging, even for seasoned runners.

Run for the Trees proved a great success with over £5,500 raised, including entry fees for 147 participants – an increase in popularity of almost 50% on the previous two years. These funds will go towards creating more new paths through the arboretum and adding botanical labels to the specimen trees.
