Tree friendships

Trees are highly social lifeforms that can support each other.

Even a dead stump can survive for many years, thanks to neighbouring trees pumping sugar to it both directly and through fungal networks.

Most grouped trees are connected through these root systems. Studies show that trees can also distinguish their roots from those of other individuals and species.

Why is this? The answer lies in collective strength...

Whereas a single tree is vulnerable, a woodland is an ecosystem that can moderate weather extremes, store huge amounts of water and generate humidity.

If a forest suffers fatalities, gaps appear in the canopy, making it easier for storms to uproot more trees.

Similarly these gaps can exacerbate damage by enabling summer heat to dry the forest floor.

Being team-spirited is ultimately in a tree’s best interests, increasing its chances of longevity.
