Tree and hedgerow planting
The ideal planting time is November to March, when deciduous treesare dormant and all trees can direct energy towards establishing roots.
Before planting, you need to consider practicalities such as:
- What will be the eventual height and spread of your tree?
- Will it obstruct anyone’s view?
- Could the branches or roots cause structural damage?
For trees we recommend ‘pit planting’ which involves carefullyinserting the tree and root ball into a hole, backfilling and firming the soilto remove air pockets. Water thoroughly every 7-10 days.
Keeping the surrounding area clear of weeds and grass for thefirst two to three years reduces competition for water and nutrients. Aone-metre diameter (50cm radius) should do the trick.
Our go-to technique for hedgerows is ‘slit planting’ which (as thename suggests) involves making a slit with a spade which is moved back andforth to create enough room to plant a whip.
