Broadly speaking, there are two main types of root formation. Taproots are thick, central and grow downwards, while fibrous root systems have thin, lateral roots close to the surface. Both absorb water and nutrients while improving stability but taproots also store food.
Developing from a seed radicle, taproots go on to form primary, secondary and tertiary roots. Trees typically start this way before evolving to a fibrous root system.
Taproots are influenced by soil quality. For example, they will likely grow deeper infertile soil, while in waterlogged soil oxygen depletion can lead to anaerobic conditions and death. Clay soils encourage multiple taproot growth whereas a deep loam is a favourite of oak taproots.
Plants with taproots have adapted to their environments over time. Mesquite is a great example with its well-developed root enabling it to live in desert conditions.
Taproots can also help prevent soil erosion by being so deeply anchored in the ground.
Tree species with taproots include oak, elm, pine, pecan and walnut, while beetroot, carrot and turnip are examples of such plants. The edible part of a carrot, for example, is a conical taproot.
