Fibrous root systems

Fibrous root systems consist of multiple fine strands originating from the stem, serving similar vital functions as taproots. Primarily they enable increased water uptake and extraction of nutrients, exacerbated by the enlarged surface area of the fine root hairs less prevalent in their deep-rooted cousins.

Certain plants with fibrous roots use them to store carbohydrates, as with taproots. Unlike taproots, however, fibrous roots reduce soil erosion by binding soil particles as they spread through its top layers.

The clearest difference is that fibrous roots grow horizontally and remain shallow, making them susceptible to drought.

Fibrous roots are usually initiated through the plant’s organs (e.g. stems or leaves) before developing to into a working root system. The stages of development are:

- Primordia (tissue) growth from cells in response to hormonal and environmental triggers

- Downward growth into soil

- Epidermal cell formation on roots creates root hair

- Full maturity
