Branchage

In Jersey, branchage starts in late Maydespite most inspections being in early July – a far preferable time forwildlife.

Key points of Branchage Action Group’s Best Branchage Practice include:

- Check before you chop

- Leave a minimum of 10 cm (4 inches) length of vegetation

- Cut only the sides of the banks during the first (June) branchage

- Preserve rare flowers/tussocks and identify invasive species

- Don’t use weedkillers, including glyphosate (or “Roundup”)

- Clear trimmings – a legal requirement

- Careful hedgerow and tree management

Checking the area first reduces the riskof strimming a hedgehog as well as alerting other small mammals, nesting birds,lizards and slow worms. However, you should keep the flail or strimmer at least10 cm above ground level.

Clearing the trimmings preventsobstructions and blocked drains while avoiding the mulching effect thatinhibits the growth more delicate wildflowers.

Preserving a healthy layer of groundcover also:

- Prevents soilerosion and potential collapse of the bank

- Preserves habitat for insects and wildlife

- Encourages plant biodiversity
